Gaian Tactics: Worm Wrangling.
Gaian Worm wrangling is an important early tactic. By adopting Green Economics, you'll boost your Planet to 3 for a 75 percent chance of Mindworm captures. Shaking down patches of Fungus with captured Worms will yield even more Worms.
Exterminate the Fungus.
Clear Fungus from the squares surrounding your base to keep Mindworms from moving adjacent to them and attacking in the same turn.
Stay on the Cutting Edge of Production.
Create a single Skunkworks city to build a unit with new components as soon as they're researched. This will defray the Prototype cost for other cities, and will keep you prepared if you suddenly have to change your production because a war breaks out.
Go With What You Know.
If you're not committed to accepting each faction's default base names, dub them according to familiar geography. For instance, if you think of the United States as a big rectangle, you can name your cities accordingly, with New York in the Northeast, Atlanta to the Southeast, Seattle to the Northwest, and Los Angeles to the Southwest. Dallas, Chicago, and Denver sit in the middle. This makes it easier to keep track of which base is which when you don't have convenient access to a map overview.

Hive Tactics: Efficiency Rating Advantages.
Efficiency rating for the Human Hive will never drop below zero (note that this doesn't mean you won't lose any energy to Inefficiency, just that you won't suffer worse than average effects). Thus, the Hive can enjoy Planned Economics and Police State Politics without suffering the drawbacks. The former will even further boost your Growth and Industry advantage, while the latter will make your faction a more effective war machine.
Make the Most of Monoliths.
Monoliths will heal units, so it's wise to use them as marshaling points for your invading forces. Remember that each unit gets one free Morale upgrade from a Monolith, so use these wisely on your more experienced troops. Each time a Monolith "trains" a unit, it has a 1 in 32 chance of disappearing.
Wartime Production.
Cloaking Formers and Crawlers is an excellent way to keep your wartime development humming without using valuable military units for escorts. When fighting breaks out, consider quickly upgrading these units to cloaked models.
In the Beginning, Grab Land.
Build Colony Pods whenever feasible, and push your borders outward. Accompany your Colony Pods with garrison troops, so the newly built base won't have to waste valuable early resources--which should be spent on Recycling Tanks or a Children's Creche--on building its first garrison.
Choose Your Friends Well.
Diplomacy is an important part of situating your empire. It pays to find a friend or two and keep them for the long haul. The bonus in Commerce and Traded Technology is generally worth occasional compromises or gifts. In order to benefit the most, you should align yourself with someone who has lots of cities, because commerce is calculated by the number of cities each party has.
